(Polished, Painted, Laminated) Wood : Public Area Cleaning

WORK TO BE DONE:    Cleaning of wooden articles.

STATE OF THE SURFACE:  stained, marked, very dirty.

EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED:  dusters, rags, mugs, toothbrush, and buckets.

AGENTS REQUIRED:  vinegar, teepol (neutral soap solution), mansion polish, turpentine oil, double boiled linseed oil , fresh water.

PROCEDURE:

1. Dust the furniture with clean dry duster/ rag.
2. Wipe the furniture well to remove any grease marks with a clean duster soaked and wrung out completely in the solution of vinegar.
3. For any stains or marks treat appropriately.
4. If the surface is too dirty apply lather of teepol with a sponge ( light soil) or a tooth brush (heavy soil)
5. Remove the traces of soap with a duster soaked and wrung out in fresh water.
6. Dry the surface.
7. If the surface is bleached out at certain places then apply double boiled linseed oil.
8. Make a smooth emulsion of mansion polish & turpentine oil.
9. Apply the emulsion in a thin layer & leave it to dry for a few minutes.
10. Buff with a clean dry duster.
11. In case of carved articles equal quantities of turpentine oil, linseed oil & half the quantity of vinegar is applied & this forms a liquid polish.

WOOD CARE

1. Treat stains as soon as possible.
2. Avoid scratching and banging.
3. Protect tops of coffee tables, dressing table with glass, table mats or table cloth.
4. Examine for wood worms, termites at regular intervals & treat quickly.
5. Clean regularly.

STAIN REMOVAL

SPILLS, SLIGHT HEAT/BURN MARKS

1. EITHER mop up as quickly as possible. Rub with a rag moistened with a drop of liquid metal polish & then re-polish.
2. OR rub a very fine abrasive like cigarette ash or very fine steel wool & re-polish.

INK MARKS ON WOOD

1. Mop up as quickly as possible.
2. Rub with fine dry steel wool or glass paper or dab with hot solution of weak acid like lemon juice & water & rinse
3. In both cases color & polish will be removed so rub with linseed oil & later apply mansion polish & buff well.

SCRATCH MARKS ON WOOD

If freshly scratched cover with iodine or potassium permanganate or shoe polish depending on the color of the wood. If necessary remove the polish first with a mild abrasive.

WINDING UP

Clean the work area & replace all the equipments & chemicals in their respective places.

SUGGESTIONS/PRECAUTIONS

1. Rags & dusters should be wrung out thoroughly.
2. All the cleaning actions will be in the direction of the grains.
