Objectives of Financial Management

by

Financial management is a critical aspect of any business, playing a pivotal role in the overall growth and sustainability of an organization. This blog post aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the objectives of financial management, its functions, and its significance in an organization’s success.

Understanding Financial Management

Financial management is primarily concerned with the procurement, allocation, and control of an organization’s financial resources. It involves planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the financial activities such as procurement and utilization of funds to fulfill the organization’s objectives.

Key Objectives of Financial Management

The objectives of financial management can be broadly categorized as follows:

  1. Ensuring Regular and Adequate Supply of Funds: The primary objective is to ensure that the organization has a regular and sufficient supply of funds to meet its operational and strategic needs.
  2. Ensuring Adequate Returns to Shareholders: Financial management aims to provide satisfactory returns to shareholders. These returns are dependent on the organization’s earning capacity, the market price of the share, and the expectations of the shareholders.
  3. Optimum Utilization of Funds: Once procured, the funds should be utilized optimally and cost-effectively to maximize the organization’s value.
  4. Ensuring Safety on Investment: Financial management also involves ensuring that funds are invested in safe ventures to achieve an adequate rate of return.
  5. Planning a Sound Capital Structure: A balanced composition of capital (debt and equity capital) is essential for maintaining financial stability. Financial management plays a crucial role in planning a sound capital structure.

Functions of Financial Management

Financial management encompasses several functions that contribute to the organization’s financial health and stability. These include:

  1. Estimation of Capital Requirements: A finance manager needs to estimate the capital requirements of the company accurately. This estimation is based on expected costs, profits, and future programs and policies of the organization.
  2. Determination of Capital Composition: After estimating the capital requirements, the finance manager has to decide on the capital structure. This involves analyzing short-term and long-term debt equity.
  3. Choice of Sources of Funds: The organization has several options for procuring additional funds, such as issuing shares and debentures, taking loans from banks and financial institutions, and drawing public deposits in the form of bonds. The choice depends on the relative merits and demerits of each source and the period of financing.
  4. Investment of Funds: The finance manager has to decide how to allocate funds into profitable ventures to ensure safety on investment and regular returns.
  5. Disposal of Surplus: The finance manager has to decide on the disposal of net profits. This can be done in two ways: dividend declaration (identifying the rate of dividends and other benefits like bonus) and retained profits (deciding the volume, which will depend on the company’s expansion, innovation, and diversification plans).
  6. Management of Cash: Decisions regarding cash management are also part of financial management. Cash is required for various purposes like payment of wages and salaries, payment of bills, meeting current liabilities, maintaining enough stock, purchasing raw materials, etc.
  7. Financial Controls: The finance manager has to exercise control over finances through techniques like ratio analysis, financial forecasting, cost and profit control, etc.

In conclusion, financial management is a comprehensive field that plays a crucial role in an organization’s success. Understanding its objectives and functions can provide valuable insights for anyone interested in the financial aspects of business management.
